High water bills due to irrigation are a common problem to many homeowners whether in Central Florida or not. We offered one of our local residential customers a solution to irrigate the lawn without expense of a high water bill.

These photos display a Berkeley 1½ horsepower centrifugal irrigation pump installation designed to pull water from a lake in the backyard of this property.

Our customer was strapped with a high monthly water bill just from watering the lawn. Spending upwards of $280 a month exclusively on potable water for lawn irrigation purposes was not lucrative at all putting a huge dent in the family budget. Cutting back on the amount used to reduce the water bill, his lawn suffered quickly deteriorated from lack of water.

Our plan of action was to install centrifugal irrigation pump equipment and convert the irrigation from a potable water system to lake water. Some of the components we installed include an intake filter, check valve and a goose float shown in the scrolling photos to the top left. The electricity to run the pump will only add a minimal amount to the monthly electric bill.

The arms shown on the end of the intake are added in case the lake levels should happen to drop too low. In this scenario, the arms prevent the intake filter from laying on the bottom of the lake. The pump is mounted onto cinder blocks since the lake has been known to rise to the base of the lowest block. A pressure relief valve, discharge fiter and pressure gauge were installed to monitor the system’s dynamic operating pressure.

This pump installation to will pay for itself within the next 12 months just from the savings on his water bill alone! In most cases, you too can use lake water to irrigate your lawn and save a ton on your water bill!
