sprinklersThank you for visiting the Hessenauer Sprinkler Repair and Irrigation blog and website. Today we would like to give our online readers some tips about when to water the lawn.

Try to avoid daily, light watering. Water in the early morning, about 4am to 10am. Change the time that your system runs monthly, or at least seasonally. If your irrigation system is working properly, you will not have to rely much on Mother Nature. Different amounts of water are required depending on plants, grass and type of soil. Only water when needed. Schedule watering periodically or use a rain sensor to adjust when watering times proceed.

Generally, the best time to water the lawn would be during the cool, early morning hours. Morning watering allows grass blades to dry by afternoon, making them less susceptible to foliar diseases. Watering is more efficient in morning hours because of less evaporation and wind. Evaporation loss can be higher during the day. Alternately, watering when the grass is already wet from the morning dew, you won’t alter the natural state of the grass very much. If you must water in the late afternoon, stop watering enough before dark for the grass to dry. Watering at night is not encouraged because moisture left on the grass blades could encourage fungus growth and disease.

The most efficient way to water is to saturate the root zone then let the soil dry to encourage healthy, deep root growth.

Flowers need frequent watering in general, or a daily “quick drink”, so to speak. Hand watering is the easiest way to accomplish this. Newer shrubs should be watered daily for the first few months. Older shrubs basically need one short watering cycle about once or twice a week, although many plants with north or east exposure may need much less.

Avoid overspray on sidewalks and walkways to prevent too much water usage and lower the water bill. In certain cases, residential customers can use nearby water sources such as a lake for irrigation purposes to save water. Saving money is always a plus and lake water can be a solution that saves our customers a ton of cash.
