irrigation drainage

Thank you for visiting the Hessenauer Sprinkler Repair and Irrigation blog and website. We offer our online readers news, tips and advice concerning sprinkler irrigation and drainage here in Orlando and the Central Florida area. Today we would like to discuss two main types of drainage systems available, surface and subsurface drainage.

Drainage systems can be divided into two categories, surface and subsurface. At the disposal end of either drainage system is an outlet, and the outlet is the point of disposal of water from the system.

The outlet for a drainage system may be a natural stream or river or a large constructed ditch. Grass could be grown on the banks, which is kept clear of trees and brush that would interfere with water flow.

Surface drainage systems remove water from the surface of the soil to the bottom of the ditches. For soils that transmit water slowly, surface drainage systems are ideal.

With a subsurface drainage system, all parts except the outlet are located below the surface of the ground. This provides better drainage than a surface system since it removes water from the soil to the depth of the drain, thus giving plants more soil mass for root development. This permits the soil to warm up faster to maintain a better balance in the soil.

Subsurface drainage systems are as important in many irrigated areas as they are in humid areas. A drainage system is needed on irrigated lands to control the water table and ensure that water will be able to move through a soil, thus keeping salts from accumulating in the root zone and making the soil unproductive.
