Today we would like to cover a couple points relating to troubleshooting sprinkler leaks.

Water leaks are most common from cracked, broken water pipes. Cracked pipes can result from a variety of different circumstances, including deterioration and the shifting of the landscape or earth. There are obvious ways to locate a sprinkler leak as indicated by puddles of standing water. Some homeowners may wonder, “Why does my sprinkler leak water when the system is turned off?”

The most common reason why a sprinkler will leak when the irrigation system is supposed to be turned off is called “Low Head Drainage”. “Low Head Drainage” occurs when the lowest head on a zone allows water to drain from the lateral piping, out of the sprinkler. If the issue is low head drainage, residual water will stop flowing after all the water has left the pipe. The solution is to install check valves, such as the HCV, on sprinklers and lateral lines.

Another reason there may be water leaking through a zone valve is because there is debris obstructing the valve’s diaphragm. The obvious solution is to clear the debris from this and any sections of the irrigation system by rinsing parts with clean water and re-assemble the valve. If there is visible damage, the diaphragm assembly may have to be replaced.
