sprinklersWelcome to the Hessenauer Sprinkler Repair and Irrigation blog and website. We like to inform our online readers about sprinkler irrigation here in Orlando and the Central Florida area. Today we would like to give our website visitors some tips and advice concerning the importance of proper sprinkler height in an irrigation system.

Incorrect sprinkler head height is one of the most common problems leading to brown spots and poor growth. Heads installed at incorrect heights can also lead to damage to the sprinkler system.

When sprinkler heads are installed too deeply into the ground, they are unable to rise above the level of the ground, grass or turf, thus preventing water spraying properly. In turn, flooding around the sprinkler heads and coverage gaps could become a problem. Retractable sprinkler heads can accumulate dirt and debris which causes retraction problems and mechanism failures.

Alternately, when sprinkler heads are placed too high, there is a concern of tripping over them or even landscaping equipment such as lawnmowers or weed-whackers becoming damaged and causing damage to the irrigation system. The easiest way to correct this is to dig out around the head, disconnect it, and reconnect it using funny pipe or a swing joint, which can be positioned to exactly the right height.

Natural growth of surrounding plants can cause incorrect sprinkler height and may need adjustment as the plant grows. Sprinkler heads watering ground cover plants could also need adjustment.

Ground levels can raise and lower over time, therefore causing sprinkler heads to be too high or low. If sprinkler heads are left at too low of a height, erosion can wear away the dirt in around the sprinkler head and flooding may occur. All sprinkler systems should be checked periodically to verify that the heads are still at the correct level. Proper sprinkler height is important for a healthy lawn, to avoid injury and flooding, and even to prevent damage to your lawn and landscaping equipment.
